Questions
NIE Barcelona for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens
The green certificate, the white NIE, Rambla Guipúzcoa and the padró: answers for Europeans moving to Barcelona.
01I am staying in Barcelona for good. White NIE or green certificate?
The green one. The registration certificate gives you the number and records your residence; a white NIE certificate only gives you the number, which suits non-residents and one-off transactions.
02Which office do EU citizens go to in Barcelona?
In the city, the Oficina de Régimen Comunitario at Rambla Guipúzcoa 74, both for the NIE of non-residents and for the registration certificate. Several comisarías of the province list EU-citizen procedures as well.
03Can I register before I have a job?
Yes, under another route: study with health cover, or sufficient resources with health insurance. Without any route, the white NIE certificate is the option for a specific transaction.
04Do I need the padró for the certificado de registro UE in Barcelona?
Generally not, according to Barcelona International Welcome, unless your address differs from one you gave before. Some officers may ask for it all the same, so registering first is the safe choice.
05My partner is not European. Are they covered?
They file their own application, form EX-19, for the card Spain issues to non-EU relatives of EU citizens.
06I am Swiss, or Norwegian. Does the EU route apply to me?
Yes. Citizens of the EEA and of Switzerland follow the same route as EU citizens: form EX-18 and the green certificate.
