§1Before the flight
- The admission letter from your university or school
- Proof of the means to fund your stay
- Health insurance that the consulate accepts
- A passport valid for the whole course
- The visa application, at the consulate that covers the place where you live
§2Your first weeks in Barcelona
Once you have an address, register on the padró and book the toma de huellas for your student TIE. Most universities run an international office that explains their own steps, and the city’s Barcelona International Welcome desk helps international students and their families with settling-in procedures, by appointment.
§3Working while you study
A student stay allows some paid work, within limits set by the immigration rules, and an employer will need your NIE and a social security number to hire you. Read what your authorisation permits before you sign anything.
§4Renewal, and the end of the course
A student TIE follows your course. Renewal is requested before it expires, with proof that your studies continue. When the course ends, the rules offer other routes, such as looking for work or taking a job, and each has its own application.
