Your TIE in Barcelona, from fingerprints to the card

In Barcelona, a non-EU resident applies for the TIE after arriving: a cita previa for the fingerprints (toma de huellas), where you hand in form EX-17 with the paid 790-012 at the office your confirmation names, then the card, collected in person. The TIE is a photo card that shows your NIE; the initials stand for Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero. It is never requested before the trip.

Have this prepared

§1Book it as soon as you land

The period for applying is set by your situation, counted from your entry into Spain, and your visa or the resolution that granted your authorisation tells you what it is. It is short, and appointments in the province take time to find, so start looking in your first days here.

§2The file for the appointment

  • Form EX-17, completed and signed
  • Your passport with the visa, and a photocopy
  • The resolution of your authorisation, if you have one
  • The Modelo 790 código 012 for the card, paid
  • A recent colour photograph, passport style
  • Your padró certificate or other proof of address, if the office asks for it

§3Where it happens in Barcelona

The Policía Nacional’s listing on policia.es places the issue of TIE cards for non-EU citizens at the Oficina de Régimen General, at the same Rambla Guipúzcoa 74 address as the EU office, and most comisarías of the province list TIE issuance as well. Finished cards from the city are handed out at Carrer de Mallorca 213, on the corner of Enric Granados. Your confirmation names your office.

§4Collecting the card

Producing the card takes some weeks. Keep the receipt (resguardo) you are given at the fingerprint appointment: you collect the card in person with it and your passport, usually with another cita previa.

Questions on this entry

Can I travel while the card is being made?
Leaving Spain without the card can make coming back difficult. If a trip cannot wait, ask about an autorización de regreso, the return authorisation handled at Rambla Guipúzcoa.
Is the NIE on my TIE a new number?
No. If you already had a NIE, from a purchase or an earlier stay, the TIE carries that same number.
Do UK citizens get a TIE?
Yes. Since Brexit, UK nationals who live in Spain are non-EU residents; and the TIE of those settled here before 2021 mentions the Withdrawal Agreement.
