Travelling before your card is ready: the return authorisation

Between the fingerprint appointment and the day you collect your TIE, or while a renewal is pending, you may have no valid card in your wallet. Leave Spain during that time and you need an autorización de regreso to be let back in.

Entry reviewed

Have this prepared

§1When it applies

  • Your first TIE has been applied for but not yet issued
  • Your TIE has expired and the renewal you filed is still being processed

§2The application

The request is made in person, with a cita previa, your passport, proof that your application or renewal is in progress, and the paid Modelo 790 código 012. Once granted, the authorisation covers a limited period, so fit the trip inside it.

§3Before you board

The authorisation is a document for returning to Spain. Ask your airline, and any country you pass through, whether they accept it, and carry the receipt of your pending application with it.

Questions on this entry

My renewal was filed on time. Can I travel without the authorisation?
A renewal receipt on its own may not be accepted when you come back from outside the Schengen area. The return authorisation removes the doubt.
Is it a kind of visa?
No. It is a permission to come back, issued to people who already live in Spain while their card is being processed.
Do EU citizens ever need one?
No. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens travel on their passport or ID card; the authorisation concerns non-EU nationals waiting for a card.
