UK nationals in Barcelona: the NIE and the TIE since Brexit

Brexit moved British citizens to the non-EU side of every Spanish form. What you need now depends on when your Barcelona life began: if you were settled here before it took effect, the Withdrawal Agreement gives you a TIE of your own; newcomers follow the rules for non-EU citizens; buyers who live elsewhere need only a NIE.

§1Settled here before 2021

Were you living in Spain, and registered as a resident, before the transition period ended? Then the Withdrawal Agreement keeps your rights. Your residence document is a TIE that states it, issued after a fingerprint appointment. An old green certificate is no longer the document to rely on at a border or a bank.

§2Moving here now

A UK national who moves to Barcelona today needs a visa or residence authorisation for stays beyond 90 days, whether for work, study, remote work or living on their own means, and then a TIE like any other non-EU resident.

§3Buying or inheriting without living here

For a purchase, a sale or an inheritance, a UK citizen who does not reside in Spain needs a NIE, not a TIE. In Barcelona, non-EU citizens who are not resident request it at Passeig de Sant Joan 189; a Spanish consulate in the UK is the alternative before travelling.

Questions on this entry

My green certificate dates from 2019. Is it still valid?
It records an earlier registration, but the document meant for Withdrawal Agreement residents is the TIE, so exchanging the certificate for the card is the safer course.
Can I spend three months in Barcelona without any paperwork?
As visitors, UK nationals can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area. Living here is another matter and needs a visa or authorisation.
Do British buyers go to Rambla Guipúzcoa?
No. Rambla Guipúzcoa handles EU citizens; as non-EU nationals, British non-residents request a NIE at Passeig de Sant Joan 189.
