Questions

NIE and TIE in Barcelona for non-EU citizens

Visas, fingerprints, Passeig de Sant Joan and Carrer de Mallorca: answers for everyone else, the British included.

01I have a visa. Is there anything left to do in Barcelona?
Yes. Book the toma de huellas for your TIE soon after you arrive, within the period your visa or resolution sets, and register on the padró at your address.
02Where do non-EU citizens get a NIE without living in Spain?
In Barcelona, at the police office of Passeig de Sant Joan 189; abroad, at a Spanish consulate in the country where they live.
03Where is my TIE collected?
Cards processed in the city are handed out at Carrer de Mallorca 213, on the corner of Enric Granados. If your fingerprints were taken at a comisaría of the province, follow the instructions you were given there.
04I am British and lived here before 2021. What should I hold?
A TIE that mentions the Withdrawal Agreement. If you still rely on an old green certificate, exchanging it for the card is the safer course.
05My card is being renewed. Can I travel abroad?
With an autorización de regreso, yes. It is requested at Rambla Guipúzcoa 74, by cita previa.
06Does buying a home in Barcelona give me residence?
No. Spain ended the golden visa in 2025. A purchase needs only a NIE; residence is a separate application with its own route.
