§1The pieces of the file
- Form EX-15, completed in capitals and signed, plus a spare copy
- Your passport (EU citizens may bring their national ID card instead) and a photocopy of it
- A document that shows why you need the number: a job offer, a reservation contract for a flat, a university admission, a letter from a notary
- The Modelo 790 código 012, filled in for a NIE assignment and paid
- Your cita previa confirmation and its reference number
§2The form, block by block
The first block is about you. Write your names exactly as they appear in your passport, second surname included, then your date and place of birth, nationality and the details the form asks for. The address can be your home abroad if you have nothing in Barcelona yet.
The second block is the request itself. Tick the assignment of a NIE (asignación de NIE) and state the reason: economic, professional or social. “Moving to Spain” is not a reason the office can check. The reason you write has to match the document you bring.
§3Paying the fee
The fee is paid with the Modelo 790, código 012, which you generate on the Policía Nacional website. Tick the line for the assignment of a NIE, print the form and pay it at a bank that accepts it, or online if your bank offers it. The stamped or validated copy goes into your file: without it, the appointment ends there.
§4Not in Spain yet?
Non-residents can also request the NIE from a Spanish consulate in the country where they live, with the same EX-15. It spares buyers and heirs a trip, but each consulate sets its own appointments and its own pace, so ask yours before you count on it.
A third route is a NIE online with Gestoraz, a remote service for people who would rather not wait for a consulate or a Barcelona slot.
