Your first month in Barcelona, in the right order
NIE, padró, bank, social security: each step asks for the one before it. A sequence that spares you a second trip to the same counter.

Arrivals in Barcelona tend to learn the order of things by trial and error: the bank wants a NIE, the padró wants a lease, the landlord wants a NIE. The loop is real, but it has a way out.
Start with the number, because almost everything asks for it. EU citizens who are staying can go straight to the registration certificate; non-EU residents book the toma de huellas for their TIE, and their NIE is usually already printed on the visa.
Then the address. A tenancy agreement of at least three months lets you register on the padró at an Oficina d’Atenció Ciutadana, online with a digital ID, or by phone on 010.
With the number and the padró in hand, the bank account and the social security number come more easily, and so do the health centre and the school forms.
If you need the number before you can even travel, you can get a Spanish NIE online with Gestoraz and land with the first step already behind you.
